The experience:
Tondaya, established in 1885, was the typical large-scale workshop during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Five buildings in Tondaya was registered as National Cultural heritage in 1999 and also as Structure of Landscape Importance in Kyoto in 2007. Tondaya, which once was a Kimono large-scale wholesaler now also enlighten the education of traditional Kyoto lifestyle culture.

We are very welcome you to Tondaya to learn traditional Kyoto lifestyle culture.
The buildings here were all establishing in exquisitely traditional machiya-style. Try to image how many surprises will be found from the broad room frontage which measures in 14.4 meters (in Japanese measurement is 8 ken) unceasingly stretching in the interior of the house. There are also three mysterious storehouses and six traditional courtyards which we can feel the flow of the season and the tea room「樂壽」in the deepest of the buildings.
Tondaya is full of Kyoto history and custom. We as tourists can not only soak up traditional culture but also truly understand how ancient Kyoto folks lived and the real Kyoto.
We have designed three different courses especially for foreign traveler:

Machiya guiding kimono dress-up experiencing tea ceremony experiencing approx. 1 hour
【C course】
Machiya guiding small room (Koma) tea ceremony experiencing
approx. 1 hour (group fare,4-5 people per set)
This tour centers on learning Japanese custom and leads you experiencing the essence spirit of Kyoto. We will show you and explain to you everything from the interior of buildings, furniture to daily necessaries.
In the Kimono dress-up session we will offer our valued customers the best kimono made by high class silk. Customers can choose one you like and there will be knowledgeable professionals help you to wear on. You can enhance your tea ceremony experience by wearing a kimono.
And it would be also fun to learn how to move gracefully while wearing this gorgeous costume.
In the tea ceremony session, we will prepare tea table and chairs for our valued customer so there is no need to worry about kneel sitting. We may change the place subject to number of people.
For those who appoint to have ceremony in the small tea room (Koma) kneel sitting is necessary. The average duration would be 20 mins.
